yeah. unfortunately that's why i discontinued the story because of the attacks that I didn't properly research my material. the main goal of the story was to illustrate differences between TL's, throw in a bit of romance (girl meets boy), and then contact with the other timelines. I was also going to write more on the political sphere of the PKH but .... To Josquius: would you like to see it reposted on a different thread and continued? i promise that i'll change the errors and make it as less offending as possible. |

When I pointed out your mistake about Kaiulani's name, it was because her name is Victoria Kaiulani Cleghorn (as pointed out in one of the websites you mentioned) - not Kaiulani Bernice Pauahi Bishop. She probably would have ruled as Kaiulani, but her named didn't and wouldn't include Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Kaiulani and Pauahi are two different women, Kaiulani is of the Kalakaua Dynasty and Pauahi is of the Kamehameha Dynasty. Kaiulani's full name is Victoria Kawekiu Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Kaiulani - but that isn't important. When I mentioned that your ATL/Mosaic Earth Hawaii didn't appear any different from today's Hawaii, its true. Theres no indication how the place is fundamentally different than if the Republic of Hawaii had continued to exist as an American protectorate. There shouldn't be a reason for an Office of Hawaiian Affairs in an independent Hawaiian nation. The real decimation of Hawaiian language and culture happened after annexation. At worst an ATL Hawaii would be a bilingual nation, Hawaiian and English equally spoken, at best there would be several languages spoken, with pidgeon english being very wide spread.

To: David S. Poepoe When I first got interested in alternate history it was mainly for the stories that various writers wrote. I do not pretend that I did not fully research historical fact when I started the idea that started this story. The main impulse that came about this idea was mainly to write a story about it and have it be read by the viewers on line as well as to get corrections on it. I fully apologize for the misspellings and any other insults that I may have made upon those offended but this is a story and not a history, as chronicled year by year. As for the error upon Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop's name, I simply point out the material that I consulted in using her name: 1) http://www.electricscotland.com/history/women/wh36.htm says her first name was Kaiulani 2) http://216.239.57.104/search?q=cache:xSVpZALc1MAJ:hml.org/mmhc/exhibits/heritage/qmcboard.html+Kaiulani+Bernice+Pauahi+Bishop&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 under the name Archibald Scott Cleghorn says that his daughter was also named Kaiulani

Okay, you know that you've got Kaiulani's name all wrong right? If you can get it through the ILL department at you college library take a look for Billie Beamer's The Royal Torch. Beamer certainly had an axe to grind against the Royals, such as the Kawananakoas. I've had the pleasure and honor of having had lunch with Quentin Kawananakoa at the Columbia Inn years ago. I have hobnobed with members of the Royal Societies when I lived in Hawaii. For a real life organization set on preserving Hawaiian culture look no further than the Committee for the Preservation and Study of Hawaiian Language, Art and Culture at the UH. It was founded by the State back in the 1950s. Your portrayal of Hawaii doesn't appear at all to be different from the State as it appears to be now. Nothing is radically different but just given a thin disguise. |

August 7th Today would have been the normal drag of meetings with governmental officials with the exception what Elon brought to the State House (*). How can I describe her? At first glance she could have passed for a local girl, straight from the North Shore. At second glance (when I was talking with Elon), she could have been my high school girlfriend, minus the dark tan and Spanish accent that she had. Her name was Joanne Hiyashi, late of the Argentinean Navy, member of that diplomatic mission from the Falkland Islands. Previously, I had not really paid any attention to her, given the pressing matters I had with Minister Jasper Young of the Water Department. I had to get the figures on whether or not the wells had enough for both the military and the civilian population. When I was done with Minister Young, I had noticed Elon and the girl standing in front of the Restoration Mural along the South Wall. It was only natural that I went to find out why Elon was showing a girl around in the State House in such tumultuous times. The conversation went a little like this: Elon: …And this to the side is President McKinley signing the Accords that later would give foundation for the kingdom-state that you are currently in. Notice the flag in the background- it only has 45 states (*1) other states have yet to be added by this time, because of future wars that the US has yet to be engaged, such as the Spanish-American Conflict and the Mexican Revolution. Oh…hello Benny. Me: Hello. Her: (sticking out her hand.) Lt. Joanne Hiyashi, Argentinean Navy. You are? Me: Err…Procurator General Baruch Mau Sung Yee. But you can call me Benny if you like. Her: Very well, Senor Yee. Me: They teach English in Argentina? Her: Yes- why? Your schools do not? . (Here Elon was rolling his eyes. Had he been any closer I would have kicked him in the shins.) Me: Please excuse me for misunderstanding you. In our world, Spanish is the dominant language beyond the Rio Grande. Her: So you can only speak English? Me: I can speak German at a conversational level. Her: Simple conversation? Me: Yeah. They didn’t have it at Whittier. They only had Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese. Her: Hmmm… The rest of the conversation pretty much went along that line - languages, college degrees, and so on. I was really surprised that much of Argentina in her world was very much like Hawaii, only even more multicultural. We went on for about a half hour with Elon looking very crossed that I had interrupted his conversation. Sadly just about the time that I was about to ask her if she had time available tomorrow, my phone rang. Randal’s voice came up about some representative from OHA (*3) talking to the press. That pretty much ended the conversation with me hurrying off to the office with me pressing my card in hand so that she would come again. I hate loose lipped politicians. Footnotes (*) “…State House…”- Queen Kaiulani Bernice Pauahi Bishop later commissioned a “…house for the State government to be constructed, both of beauty & in grandeur…” towards the last years of her reign. (1911- 1931) [In this TL, due to the ripple effects of the financial compensation by the British crown, Princess Kaiualani grew up minus the tragic losses that she faced in OTL and became the very beloved “People’s Princess”. Also, Queen Lili’uokalani lived longer and retired from her rule in 1911 due to health reasons and wanting her successor to have a chance at the throne. (*1) “…only have 45 states…”- Although Elon has this number a bit off, in this TL, the United States consists of 64 states. Much of the additional states are Latin American and Caribbean nations that exist in OTL, like Haiti and the Dominican Republic. (*2) “…buggered…”- Benny watches mystery shows on BBC America. Sadly he’s not British. (*3) “…OHA…”- OHA is the abbreviation of Office of Hawaiian Affairs. In this TL, OHA was founded as an office to preserve Hawaiian culture. Shamelessly it is now an agency acting to preserve Hawaiian culture via by political power. (It comes from the declining numbers of “purebred” Hawaiians.)

Wahoo! A Hawaii person! Yay! I'm a graduate from Kalani High School c/o 2001 and going into my junior year at Whittier College. As for the other details you raised, I'll try to explain the apparent conflicts between this TL and OTL. 1) Many of the prominent members of the Annexation Club were in a state of limbo due to the successfull coup of the Republic of Hawaii. The members of the Annexation Club weren't simply used to an armed militia that had been adopting new measures of warfare, thanks to the extra training Robert Wilcox had while at the Royal Military Academy at Turin. (The story was that he had stumbled upon von Clausewitz's "On War", Machievelli's "The Prince" & "The Art of War" (*), and an early translation of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War". Needless to say Robert Wilcox switched his studies from artillery to infantry tatics) There was also the idea on what to do with the assests that the Kamahamaha Rifles had siezed from the Annexation Club. Hence the Restoration Accords of 1894-5, when both the members of the Annexation club as well as their assests were used as collateral to get Hawaii's sovereignty back. As a result of the Accords, much of the members of the Annexation Club were spared from execution but permanently banned from ever stepping foot in Hawaii. (Unfortunately the boat that had collected these exiles seemed to have suffered an unexplained explosion in it's hull. So far there has no explanation offered so far.) Those assests that the members of the Annexation Club did have (such as the Honolulu Advertiser) were either sold off for economic gain and/or given to more 'loyal' subjects. Such was the fate for the members of the Annexation Club. 2) In the Restoration Accords of 1895/6, President Cleveland gladly signed the provisions that the United States would return the sovereignty to the Hawaiian monarchy. However, in those very provisions, the post of Procurator Governor was created in order to statisfy the sugar lobby in Washington. Much of the powers that the Procurator Governor have been already described in the August 9th post. In a way, the link that had been created between Hawaii and the US was preserved so that both American interests would be preserved and the sovereignty of the Hawaiians perserved. But in no way possible was the Procurator Governor allowed to overthrow the monarchy or let alone have his agenda superseed the monarchy. The Procurator Governor looked after American interests and the King looked after Hawaiian interests. 3) With sovereignty restored to the Hawaiian Monarchy, Queen Liluokalani wrote a new consititution in order to deal with the mess post-Restoration Accords. (Ironically, this consitution was not "new" at all, but the consitution that she had wanted to write in OTL.) The Consitution of 1896 proposed the founding of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to deal with the problems that the Hawaiian people faced at the time as well as to 'beef' up the security that the Kamahamaha Rifles had given to the Monarchy. Over time, both the Constitution and the Hawaiian people went through many changes. One of those changes was the altering the House of Ali'i to the Senate so that members from all the classes could be elected, due to the emiment families such as the Kawananakoa's branching out to commercial and industrial branches. (*1) >Footnotes (*)- Due to the money given by Queen Victoria, some of the military went to train the Royal Guard to become a fighting force in order to prevent such occupations. By the time Queen Liluokalani had been elected to the throne, the officiers of the Royal Guard had managed to attend established military academies across the globe due to the "Euro-fashion" of the day as well as other practical means. (The Royal Guard also happened to be quite popular with the natives due the many conflicts that Kalakaua had with American businessmen, hence their greater numbers in opposition of the forces that the Republic of Hawaii had.) (*1)- After the Consititution of 1895 was implemented, much of the Hawaiian families were compensated from the siezed assests of the Annexation Club, and promptly went to getting more capitial in order to counter any possible threat by American capital again.

What school are you attending? I attended Moanalua High School before moving to Los Angeles. Take a look at Gaven Dawes' A Shoal in Time, pretty much the standard textbook on Hawaii history. Ralph S. Kuykendall's History of the Kingdom of Hawaii (or is it History of the Hawaiian Kingdom?) is also essential. There was alot of books about the overthrow published back in 1993 when I was there, those are pretty good also. Do a little research. www.dole-plantation.com. Good old Sanford is at most a distant cousin or something. The reading room of the Hawaiian Historical Society, over behind Kawaiahao Church has a bust of him on display. If there was anybody would should have been exiled it was him. Thurston I just would have executed. Sanford Dole would have been pleased to see Liliuokalani deposed and Kaiulani placed on the throne and used as a figurehead. It is the members of the Annexation Club, like Thurston, that wanted complete annexation. Sanford was not a plantation owner, but the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Take a look for A. Grove Day's History Makers of Hawaii: A Biographical Dictionary. Even the library near you must have a copy. Its a bit dated, but its the best resource available right now - and probably for a few years to come. Your work reminds me very much of a novel published in Hawaii which was a very biased view of the Kawananakoa family and the scandels it was involved in in the 1930s. I'll have to look for it when I get home, I can't remember the title. The University of Hawaii has a book that contains the various constitutions of the Kingdom of Hawaii. You'll see that Kalakaua established that any male successors were to be named Kalakaua. Strange that there's a Congress, when there was a National Legislature with a House of Ali'i and Representatives. If you every make it to UH Manoa look up either Dr. Pauline King, probably the best historian there or Nikolas Schweizer in the German Department. He's also the consulate-general for Switzerland, another fine resource on the Kingdom of Hawaii. Also it may be easy if you just visited the Palace Giftshop at Iolani Palace, there you'll find excellent books on Old Hawaii. |

oops. sorry about that little detail. So the "Royal System" would be like this: 1) King- elected for life, limited only by chosen retirement/ death/ "scandalous activities" (*) >a) Cabinet, appointed ministers to each dept. >b) "Congress" -->1) Senate (senators elected every 6 years) -->2) House of Rep. (rep. elected every 3 years) 2) High Chief- elected every 5 years, equilivent (sp?) to Governor of each Island (*1) >a) Island Council (councilmen elected every 4 years) 3)Mayor- elected every 4 years >a) City Council (Councilmen elected every 2 years) (*)= Being influenced by special interests, Having affairs with women, Funneling money to other places that it should not be, etc. [Ironically no monarch since the Restoration has been kicked out of office, although 2 have resigned for "health reasons"] (*1)= The exception to this rule is Niihau, which is administered by the Robinson family (like OTL), who send a representative to the King every so often. To David S. Poepoe: LOL. I was under the impression he was the founder of the Dole Pinapple "fame", but information on his connection to the family is lacking in that part. The cirriculum here in Hawaii teaches that Sandford Dole was of the Dole family and the reason why he supported the overthrow came from economic/political reasons. But apparently the books were wrong....(shrugs)

Sanford Dole, believe it or not, is not related to the Dole's of Pineapple fame. In the old days of the Kingdom there were Governors in charge of the various islands, not mayors. |

LOL. I tend to think of it as a mix between improvisation as well as some detail that I was going to add later on. Anyway- here's the next installment. ---- August 4th Two things have superseded any other issue that both HM King Kuhio’s government and Jon’s agenda for the day. First Issue: the world is really gone. We’ve managed to get some radio traffic from the Barbers Point Station on a wayward Polish army that was caught up in this mess. Then we got several other broadcasts that usually state themselves in the same situation that we are in. Jon has approved several flights from Hickam AFB to check out if Asia is still there as well as the other island states around. There is also the issue of the Canadians, Koreans, and Chinese. They tried to hail their own nation and got nothing except someone babbling in Mongolian about the gods not being pleased. (Or was it Siberia?) Second Issue: the military. The situation at hand calls for military jurisdiction as well as action. But thanks to the Accords martial law is only allowed in extreme situations with the monarch kept on as the “general” of the state forces. So Jon and I and a couple of generals, admirals, and members of the Royal Guard had a 4 hour meeting about this issue. The Royals are really wary about military involvement on such a grand scale, given their reservation from previous experiences. However, the world is gone and if conflict breaks out on the two levels of government, Hawaii will be lost. A comprise was made at the end of the meeting on King Kuhio doing an address like FDR with Jon taking up at the end. So we’re going to have a general mobilization with the state troops complimenting our own if combat situations will happen. The ambassadors and the three navies will be utilized for contact with these other ships and will be offered sanctuary since their nations are gone. Schedule: In an hour I’ll have to do my bit on the speech. After that I’ll have to meet with the Koreans, Chinese, Canadians, and the pissed off ambassadors from Japan, the Philippines, China, and Korea. After that I’ll have to go eat dinner and be on call for any more developments. ---- Excerpt from HM King Kuhio’s IV Radio/TV address Dated August 4th 2003 Good evening. As of 6:30 PM yesterday, an astral phenomenon occurred in the heavens that coincided with the ceasement of all communications from the Mainland as well as other nations. I have been at the forefront of any attempts by both federal and royal agencies to find out the reason of such an event with the result being something out of this world. The world has been replaced by other nations that possess an alternate history and culture other than our own. Such proof was shown by a radio broadcast made by British forces stationed in the Dominion of the Falkland Islands. Dialogue was exchanged between Governor Stanley Kebbol and me about the particulars of the Event and he expressed the similarities of the same position that we are in. In such matters, it is hard to say what our next action will be in the coming days. Procurator Governor Jonathan Long has set out the call for full mobilization of the armed forces for protection against any foreign invasion. But it is not to the degree as World War 2. Instead, our actions as civilians will be allowed to continue with minor conservation measures implemented in order to save for the future. The administration of such conservation measures will be implemented by the Office of Health Standards. The military and federal offices will take care of their own business with the exception of possible diplomatic contact with the other nations. ...... ---- August 6th Cedric stopped by at the office for some papers and to see if General Ronald was there. I bumped into him on way to my desk. He noticed that I had lines on my face and considerable darkening under my eyes. The next comment concerned if I had drunken too much ice tea. I just shook my head and told him the non-stop meetings and dealings I had to do yesterday as well as today. Cedric patted me on the shoulder and said he sympathized with my situation, since he too is in the dammed arena (*). Maybe, he said, we could go out fishing again, if I was up to it. I don’t know. My brother was ringing me up just an hour before Cedric’s lame comforting. We couldn’t talk long but I had the gist of it. My family is big- seven children on my grandmother’s level. That’s a lot of relatives- and a whole lot of relations and connections lost both from the Mainland and elsewhere. Not to mention that I just lost my connection to the Mainland. I had friends there. I graduated from a Mainland college and worked there before I came here. Of course that doesn’t even include the dealings I had to do with both our neighbors and our new neighbors. I’ll try to outline the problems with our neighbors and then the new. Ours: Ambassadors: Jon has officially offered asylum to the many embassies that we have here in Hawaii. Of course some of them have suddenly become members of the new ‘council’ we have in dealing with the new countries. There is also a movement with those embassies that have armed forces in Hawaii becoming a part of Hawaii’s government. After all, we do need a united front for future occasions. Yet the Chinese (*1) have done something uncharacteristic in agreeing in the meetings to help out the Japanese population here in the Islands. I guess it is in fear of possible prejudice springing up now that the population of Hawaii is officially screwed. Then there is the issue of whether or not can they do what happened in 1893- which is kind of ironic if you think about it. The Admiral and members of the army have made their position known to me that this idea is stupid because of the united front idea- but unfortunately is very alive in the public’s mind. US Military: I have been meeting with representatives from HM government and civilian heads. So far they are not opposed to the restrictive measures on the food. The only question is if the US military is going to occupy them or the other ships in Pearl. It’s not a question on if they like me. It’s a question on trust. Jon has been in the post for the past 3 years and not many people here like him, even though he’s quite liberal on many issues in the State Legislature. (*2) The Royal Guards have nothing compared to both the US forces here as well as the other ships. Yes, they did have a lucky break in the Restoration (*3) but that was it. You surely cannot have a state organization that operates on the level of the RCMP (*4) and the FBI counter a very well trained military force that can kick out the king in a heartbeat. The only reason why Hawaii was spared being a territory was the international events that were occurring at that time. That period of “mercy” is not viable now because of so much military personnel here. The New: The Dominion of the Falklands: It’s ironic that the first country of this world that we have contacted is the Falklands and not the Mainland, Japan, or any other nearer nations. The people that we have run into are nice, and run the same lines as the Canadians. The only difference is that some of the dignitaries that came off the plane that landed at the airport were Hispanic in origin. There was also the issue of the helicopter that landed here. The representatives from the Marines were completely blown away on the uncanny similarities that their helicopter has to the Osprey as well as the Apache. From the reports that I got from Randal say that it did look quite futuristic. As for the meeting with the military staff and the King- it went well. The talks are still going on with Prince Albert manning the radio to see if there is any other development. (&)Guam: Thank God that it’s from our world. The plane that I mentioned earlier landed at Midway Memorial Airport on Saipan. The head cheese over there had a conference with the Admiral on what to do and what not. The overall plan is to continue surveillance on the other nations. Other nations: So far, the reconnaissance have managed to place a pseudo-European nation where Tahiti is supposed to be as well as an Imperial Japan were Japan is supposed to be. Both seem rather advanced to the level that we are in. There is also the mystery of S. America and the Mainland with different chatter and undecipherable languages. The Air Force is continuing its mission. Oh look- Randal came with pizza- Footnotes: (*) “…dammed arena”- Benny means politics. Cedric is a member of the Royal Guard Anti-Graft Unit, recently attached to the Narcotics Division. (*1) “…the Chinese…”- The Chinese and the Japanese people have never really been that close. Chinese forces did assist in the Occupation of Japan post-WW2, partly of politics, and partly of retribution due to the damages during WW2. (Think Soviet occupation of Germany but a bit more worse.) (*2) “…quite liberal…”- One of the reasons that Jonathan Long was appointed to the post in the first place, which ran along the lines of smoothing the conflict between Washington and Hawaii. (*3) “…the Restoration…”- Benny is referring to the Rebellion of 1895 where Robert Wilcox managed to “defeat” the forces of the Republic of Hawaii, who had overthrown the monarchy in the first place. Ironically the Rebellion did not result any dead but a lot of wounded and hostage taking, the most noticeably being some man who ran a newspaper at the time. (*4) “…the RCMP…”- This Canada have managed to keep their RCMP but it’s more like the FBI, with the title kept on for sentimental reasons. (&)- ah yes, and I've sort of appropiated Guam into the Hawaiian Archipeligo....sorry about that....

erm...Albert is married to the High Chief(*) Iolani Theresa Kamakawiwa'ole who is currently the most popular so far in being the next monarch of Hawaii. The reason that Albert isn't in the running so far is that the couple are quite young, and that Albert is somehow related to the Dole (*1) family, which is very very detrimental if he wants a political position in the Royal Government. (*)- High Chiefs are basically the Mayors of each Island, each elected every 5 years or so, given that the acknowledge the King/Queen and that they run by the rules that the Congress/King sets forth. (*1)- Stanford Dole, of the famous Dole Plantation that produces pineapples and such, helped in OTL's Overthrow of the Monarchy. In this ATL, some finangling was made to compensate the ex-leaders of the Republic as well as to keep their economic capital in the Islands. >Oh and by the way, how do you like the story so far? |

Quibble - If Albert's the king's son, why call him "Prince Consort"? That means someone married to a ruling monarch. Who is Albert supposed to be "consorting" with? |

- 4:30 I love fishing. Benson and Cedric managed to catch three huge buggers- two ahi’s and an ulua. The fight was long and hard but we managed to catch it. Now if only we had enough ice to put it in. -6:30 Somehow the radio’s conked out. Prince Albert was in the middle of a conversation with the Chamberlain about going about himself without a proper security detachment when he got static. Cedric put the blame on me adding too much electronics on the system, like a CD system in the cabin, but I checked the wiring myself. It isn’t broken. My phone also doesn’t work. Benson pointed out that there was something in the sky not too long ago that looked like a white flash in the evening sky. I said that he drank too many beers but both Cedric and Elon said that they saw it to. Of course the three security guys seem to think that this was a “sign from God”. There was a very long discussion about God and astronomical phenomenon’s. Several minutes later the radio broke out with the BBC on a phenomenon that happened near Port Stanley. I hit the radio on the top and finally got Pearl Harbor. It seems that much of the islands had seen the phenomenon and all communication between Hawaii and the other nations of the world went silent. I managed to get the ear of COMPACFLEET and some measures were brought to “de-panic the public”. Of course that didn’t stop my cell phone from ringing with Jon’s number flashing. There goes my fishing trip.

August 3rd The Prince Consort has arrived on my boat today, accompanied by 3 Royal Guards. They came dressed as “mere fishermen” although it was quite obvious to the people on the wharf who the “small guy” was. I really dislike royals who are too friendly with their subjects, especially those that the public really loves. I can just see their faces now, watching with wonder as their beloved Prince Consort goes on a well known ship that is owned by the Procurator General. I mean, I’m not hated by the people. It’s just that I happen to be a local boy who is occupying a Federal position. One of these days I’d like to state to them that the appointment was not my fault and that it came out of the blue when I was selling fish at my family store(*). If only Jon was looking at someone else, then I would not be in this very sticky situation. But, I digress. Prince Albert is pretty much in awe of the speed that my boat has. The guards that are around him look at me if I’m crazy. But Cedric managed to point out the good points when he started to tell stories of previous fishing trips. They were laughing their heads off when he came to the part of when Elon scared me with the broken wheel. Of course Elon and Benson had to come in with the story about the eel and the crab, which isn’t my moment in shining glory. HM Prince Albert had the glory of calling to me when I was opening the sail on if the incident really happened. I did not give him the pleasure of my response, even though I gave a stink eye to Benson on starting the whole thing. Anyway I managed to get the names of the lucky three passengers on my boat. Their names are: Leone, Keanu, and David. All of them have rank enough to guard the royal person. They are also full blooded which makes them sort of easy with me but not so with Benson. Benson was a former Marine stationed at Kane’ohe and there are some issues about preservation about land around there so, yeah. But that all got wiped out due to the stories that they told and the swiped beer that Benson took from my cooler that I was planning on to open later on. I really wish Benson wouldn’t do that every time that I bring the beer along. Of course I can’t argue with the loco moco’s (*1) he gets for free from LikeLike Drive Inn. They are my weakness. Great- some of the sauce dripped on to the page. Now I have to wipe it up… Footnotes (*)- “…at my family store”- The Yee family run a very successful fish market on Cleveland Street, in downtown Honolulu. Before Benny was appointed Procurator-General, he was appointed manager of the family run store, and had been caught off guard by his appointment. The story goes that Benny had a slab of ahi in his hand that he was selling to a customer when the Procurator-Governor rang him up on his cell phone. Benny turned his cell phone off to deal with the customer, and then found out that he hung up on the Procurator-Governor. (*1)- “…loco moco”- Go look it up for yourself. - Noon We have arrived at the fishing spot. The ship is docked at the usual spot. Benson is going off on Cedric on the virtues of fishing off near Hawaii Kai. Then HM Prince Albert got into the conversation on what type of fish he usually gets. Elon is ignoring them by his usual manner- his chair leaned back, open bag of chips nearby, and not quite snoring yet. The other three are looking for poles of their own. And then I’m perfectly happy sitting in the cabin, just listening to classical music. I just got a call from Randal. It appears that the Korean ships for the RIMPAC games (*) have arrived early, accompanied with the Chinese. I told him to do the usual business on when a foreign ship arrives at Pearl Harbor, but it appears that it’s mostly covered. One of the members of the Royal Guard contingent at Pearl is actually Korean so no confusion there over language. Admiral Tashigawa was called up and there was a meeting. I really dislike things that come out of the blue. Randal has assured me that no other “surprises” is going to happen today. I phoned (*1) COMPACFLEET to see if his assurances were good and Tashigawa’s aide told me that no “surprise” arrivals are coming this way. So far, out of the expected 10 “players” of this game (The Chileans, Argentineans, Columbians, Canadians, Russians, Chinese, Koreans, Australians, New Zealanders, Thailand people…) only three have arrived so far. The Canadians were the first, arriving the week before the scandal broke out, and are enjoying the sights of the Kingdom-State (*2). Though I received the call from Tashigawa’s office on Friday saying that there were to be more, since the Japanese want to test out their new subs. I’m not too sure if 11 representatives from different navies are going to be welcome in Pearl Harbor. I mean, I did get several complaints from people in the Downtown on “rude behavior” from the visiting Indonesians the previous year. Footnotes (*) “…RIMPAC games”- This is a reference to the military’s Pacific Rim exercise where ships of all countries that are on the Pacific Ocean come by and do war games. (*1) “…phoned COMPACFLEET”- This is a reference to the Commander of the Pacific Fleet, usually the head cheese of all US military personnel in the Kingdom of Hawaii. (*2) “…Kingdom-State”- Again, a result from the Restoration Treaty of 1895 and the Second Restoration Accords of 1946.

August 2nd I’ve rang up the usual crowd- Benson, Cedric, and Elon. Benson is really looking forward to fishing off of Molokai since he mostly fishes near Hawaii Kai. Of course the irony here is that I’m the only one that doesn’t fish in the crowd. All I do is pilot the boat, which is a challenge into itself, seeing that half the ship is made out of different parts. It’s a small habit that I have that I plan on to see through once I settle down in Hilo. I’m going to fix boats like my great-grandfather did on the Mainland (*). Such times would be Heaven for me… -Much Later It turns out that Cedric’s bringing a friend with him. Not that I am against bringing people on the Tai Hung, but this is sort of skirting the boundaries between State and Federal (*1). He’s bringing the Prince Consort (*2). I tried to query Cedric on the sheer stupidity of bringing a royal on board but it appears the Prince Consort is stubborn in his demands. It seems that Prince Albert is mighty curious about my ship, the ship that has a diesel engine as well as outrigger masts in the middle of it. Cedric says that Prince Albert has not seen a ship so bizarre as mine and would like to see how it runs on the ocean. (There was a slight “sorrow” to Cedric’s face when he told me this. I don’t know whether or not I’m going to bring my famous fishcake salad that he likes. Dumping a royal on me is kind of unfair. But then again I can remember a couple of other favors that he did for me in the past that I really didn’t expect. A tough decision…) Footnotes (*)- Oops. Forgot this footnote. "Mainland" is a reference to the Continental United States, and is still used today. }(*1) “…the boundaries between State and Federal”- It is a reference to Provision 12 of the II Restoration Accords of 1946, whereas the power that the King held was reduced down to a level that a normal governor would have in a state. The measure also included an increase of power that P-Governor had in times of war, as well as certain financial circumstances. Naturally, the people of Hawaii didn’t like this and their displeasure has been shown in several occasions. (*2) “…the Prince Consort”- This is not the appointed heir to the throne. It is just King Kuhio’s son. The Kingdom of Hawaii elects their “governor”-Monarch, who then serves for life. King Kuhio was elected in 1980, due to the retirement of his predecessor who had several health problems. (His predecessor is still alive, enjoying the restive airs of Maui, and helping the local schools developing Hawaiian immersion programs.) } (Message edited by g.bone on August 10, 2003) |

Note: Unlike my fellow authors of the thread, this story shall take place both before and after the event, in order to give the readers more background facts about the Protectorate Kingdom of Hawaii. --- Procurator-Governor- An appointed representative from the Federal government, this post was created in the Treaty of 1895 in order to deal with American interests in the Kingdom. Over time the responsibilities of this post slowly evolved to dealing with judiciary and military problems of the nation-state. During WW2 the post was added even more power when martial law was declared due to the strike at Pearl Harbor. To this day the Procurator-Governor oversees any issues that might deal with Federal interests both in law enforcement, military, grants from the Federal government, as well as environmental issues. Procurator-General- This post was created in 1936 due to conflicts between civilian and military personnel on land ownership. Unlike the Procurator-Governor, much of the duties of this post have not included additional powers over time. To this day, much of the Procurator-General oversees any issues that might arise with the US military and the civilian population -Excerpt from “Guide to Hawaiian Government” Pamphlet, printed by the US Library of Congress Publications Copyright 1976 --- Journal of Baruch “Benny” Mau Sung Yee Procurator-General of the Protectorate Kingdom of Hawaii August 1st, 2003 I have decided to go fishing. After all, I do need the break. I have not gone fishing since two weeks ago when that scandal broke out on the Budget Committee in the City Council. Apparently much of the general public was unaware of Councilman Ron Nakamura’s shenanigans in trying to funnel the money in the Hurricane Fund to help his district. Not that I am against making the city more green but that money could be used in other uses, such as preventing further financial problems for natural disaster victims. So Councilman Ron Nakamura was taken into custody and had to resign his position due to his conduct. But this is not the only scandal that has hit the local government. There was Senator Jack White before him in April, Chairman Wallace Ming of the Travel Bureau in February, and Representative Ah Young Mau of McCully. HM King Kuhio has his plate full of controversy. As a result, there has been covert meetings between HM King Kuhio and Jon (*) on helping to counter this ever growing problem of graft in the state. Naturally, state agencies would be handling such a matter. However, with the prospects of the budget being smaller than the previous year due to the recession in Japan, there have been several covert approaches to the federal government for more financial aid. The local news agencies would have a field day with this, and, some of the newspapers have already caught a whiff of such dealings. Thankfully much of those accusations have been not aimed towards the King, which preserves the relationship that we P-G’s (*1) had with the royalty since the ‘50’s (*2). Unfortunately much of the flack came to me, since Jon was in D.C. (*3) when the scandal broke out. I managed to deal with the accusation as smoothly as I could, taking no chances on getting the talks out of the public. Then Jon came home and got besieged once he got off the tarmac. Jon and I had a private conversation on what do with these situations with his ideas on enhancing the FBI’s power in Hawaii against such crimes. But in doing so, he will have to have public talks with the King, which will pierce light into previous dealings. With that potential risk looming, Jon has the good graces to inform me that his term is almost up, and my name is on the replacement list. Never mind that I had plans to retire from the post and buy a good plot of land on the Big Island (*4) - I am going back in this stupid morass for four more years. Great. Footnotes (*) “Jon”- Jonathan Long, Procurator-Governor (2000-4), He was appointed by Pres. McCain (Rep.) in his first year in office. (*1) “P-G’s”- A nickname usually reserved for members of Federal civilian posts. (*2)- “…since the ‘50’s”- A reference to the Second Restoration Talks (1945-6) due to the Martial Law declared during WW2 (*3) “…since Jon was in D.C.”- Mr. Long was reporting to his boss, Pres. McCain. (*4) “…Big Island”- It is a reference to the Island of Hawaii.
