Warped 20th century

Here is a timeline composed of many ideas that the More insectivorous Western society thread gave the final spark.

Part I:

1896-Mckinley elected over taft becuase Bryan split the democratic party
-comstock laws repealed as unconstional
-a Harry Anslinger chokes on a steak the day before he is to give his speech at

1897-colombia tries to supress a panamanian revolt. The revolt suceeds with american help and panama is annexed by the USA
- Edison invents the Serger and a working twin-tub washing
machine

1898-building on the panama canal begins
-argentina reduces its requirements to become a citizen and lwoers its tariff rates which causes
-Hawai annexed by america
-the hearst corporation makes a heavy investment in the field of hemp pulp

1899-the USA passes several very restrictive anti-immigration laws that are tilted towards people from britain and its dominions
-Christian Socialist movement which is a
-the USA sells its portion of samoa to britain in exchange for bermuda,the bahamas,jamaica and trinidad

1900's-Czarsit russia makes some reforms including land reforms
-several crises bring europe to the brink of war
-the yucatan area of mexico
-the nationalist styles of architecture appear in europe and the USA
-a migration of blacks from the south to the north begins. This migration will be called the great migration.
-the christian socialist movement begins to expand in popularity and influence
-the wine and tropical fruit industries becomes established in parts of the USA where climate permits
-the new areas of the USA in mexico begin to be modernized.

1900-McKiney reelected president
-Cuba,Puerto Rico,the spanish pacific possesions and the phillipines ceded to america in the treaty
-the overseas terretories of cuba,puerto rico,luzon,marianas,guam and micronesia set up

1901-bermuda gets statehood

1902-For no particular reason, a Irish chemist accidently discovers
LSD, but its effect aren't discovered until the 20's.

1903-Industialist, Henry Ford, starts the first asembly line. His
automoble, the '03 Ford, is the first car cheap enough for the
masses.
-safety of medicine and foods act passed which establishes the Food and Drug agency(same law that TR passed in 1906)

1904-Mark Hanna elected president
-President Hanna begins trustbusting

1905-the russo japanese war ends with japan recognizing russian control of korea and manchuria and russia ceding the kurils and sakhalin to japan.

1908-Teddy Roosevelt elected president
-many socialistic reforms made

1909-the mexican civil war begins
-the yucatan peninsula and the northern tier of mexican states occupied by america.
-tibet secedes from china

1910's-America establishes a state pension system on the lines of germany
-the ottoman empire makes some democratic reforms
-the fashion of eating crickets/grasshoppers is brought from the veterans of the second mexican war
-tropical fruit cultivation begins on a large scale in the USA were climate permits

1910-the pro-american liberal side in the civil war cedes the occupied areas to americas as compensation for help
-the mormon church doesn't ban marijuana use among its members

1911-the mexican civil war ends with the pro-american liberals winning
-overseas terretories of Yucatan,Campache and Naranjo set up from the yucatan peninsula
-Woodrow Wilson involved in scandal involving : a blackface minstrel,4 sheep and a black boy

1912-the new mexico terretory gets statehood as the states of new mexico and Gila(arizona)
-Teddy Roosevelt reelected in a landslide over Woodrow Wilson
-the terretories of Satander(Coahila),Sonora,Arizona(Nuevo Leon),Taumpalipas,Chuihaha,Sonora,Baja Del Norte and Baja Del Sur set up

1913-France and Germany reach a deal that Alsace-lorraine is to be given equal status with the rest of germany's province and that anyone from alsace-lorraine that wants to emigrate to france is to be allowed to do so and be given some money to help start a new life by the german government
-A proposed prohibition amendment is defeated . This marks the end of the prohibition movements.

1914-Gavrillo Princip blows himself up while trying to make a bomb to attack Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The Archduke's trip to Sarajevo goes off without difficulty, and he returns to Vienna.
-Chang Kai-shek overthrows the emperor and declares himsekf Emperor Chang the I of the house of Kai-shek and declares reforms
-An attempt to grant Home Rule to Ireland leads to a revolt in the Protestant north of the country. Some of the troops sent to contain the revolt instead join, but not enough to give the rebels a chance.
-Yuan Shikai and Sun Yat-sen brought in to help reform imperial china
-Harrison Narcotics act not passed
-absinthe not banned in the USA
-Ireland granted home rule

1914-1920-Wilhem assumes the throne. Disgusted by drift of Germany
he tries to steer it to a more powerful imperial course. But the
inertia is hard. He's not sure if he dismissed a chancellor how it would
be took, so he tries to work less bluntly. His frequent temper-trantrums
do not help this.

1915-china begins to stablilize and modernize

1916-Calvin coolidge elected president

1917-An unrealistically harsh assessment of the bew Russian frontier fortifications in Poland makes the rounds of the German General Staff. While there is no overt change in policy, the General Staff develops a much more cautious attitude toward foreign adventurews in general, and provoking Russia in particular. NOTE -- the German General Staff really did have exaggerated misgivings about the Russian border fortifications, which were never finished in OTL. This might have made them much more pessimistic about Germany's chances in a war against Russia.

1918-several war scares between germany and russia
-the coanda jet engine idea is sold to several air travel companies..
-Franz Ferdinand dies

1919-After waiting more than a year, Franz Ferdinand issues a new plan for governing the Empire as a crowned confederation of the traditional states: among them Austria proper, Bohemia, Hungary-Slovakia (including Transylvania and Banat), Galicia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovinia, and Dalmatia. This is less a federation as such, and more an extention of the principle of the Realunion to more than merely the Austrian-Hungarian relationship. While there are riots in Hungary over the plan, it is greeted with enthusiasm elsewhere. Even the Hungarians are eventually won to grudgingly accept the plan, mostly because it gives them a disproportionately large and powerful state.


1920-1930-Japan and argentina's economies boom
-rockets
-air travel becomes widespread with the new
-jazz becomes popular
-Creation of Leauge of Nations to mediate international relations.
-the USA establishes a proportional representation system and expands
-tanks,subs,flamethrowers

1920-coolidge reelected president
-The world just got out of a bad recession when Wilhem tried to
dismiss the Chancellor and was politely told to knock that shit off. He
sulks and this is his last major attempt at regaining true imperial power.
-women get the vote in the USA
-The new Plan of Union goes into effect, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire resumes the name of Austrian Empire, the name Austro-Bohemo-Galico-Croato-Sloveno-Bosnio-Dalmatio-Hungarian Empire being too cumbersome. A series of raids and actions by Chinese warlods cause the Great Powers to take an interest in the chaos of China.

1923- Tokyo earthquake, as in OTL. US sends help, as in OTL, but
Japanese gov't is more effusively grateful. Warming trend in
US-Japanese relations.

1924-korea fully annexed by russia

1925- Czar Nicholas II dies in St. Petersburg of natural causes. He is succeeded by his eldest daughter, the Czarina Olga

1926- After not calling the Duma for a year Czarina Olga faces internal unrest. When she does finally call the Duma, it demands new powers. After a several month standoff, the Czarina gives in, and Russia takes a tentative step toward democratic government.
