    Ultimately the threat was the Soviets and Ike had a much fuller resume dealing with them. Also Mac was not able to handle criticism and that comes with the territory of being a politician much less a President.

    Vietnam was unwinnable. You simply cannot expect to rally the locals to support a currupt post colonial regime.
