Well, the main (economic) problem in Norway after 1814 was access to capital. I sincerely doubt that this problem would have been better mitigated from Copenhagen than Stockholm.
Anyhow, lets agree to disagree then :p:)
I fully understand what you are saying, and you are of course quite correct regarding what happened. But it is just to simplified to say that what happened regarding Norway in 1814 was punishment of Denmark.
The main point in this case was that the coalition did not originally intend to punish...
No, but they got compensated with being alowed to keep the Atlantic provinces and Slesvig-Holstein. In addition they also acquired Lauenburg.
But as I said, nitpicking. In diplomatic terms, and they were important back then, it was not considered punishment.
Actually, with a POD a few years earlier the generall situation could perhaps have been suitable for a union.
If the Danish Prince Christian August had lived to become Swedish king, it is not hard to envision a "more successful" SWE-NOR union, and when Frederik VII dies without an heir in 1863...
The transfer of Norway from the Danish King to the Swedish King was considered an compensation for the Swedish loss of Finland. It was not considered an punishment of Denmark. I know this might sound as nitpicking, but it is somehow important.
It might also be of importance that to the...
You are mostly correct in your posting, but one obstacle regarding Norway is left out (as it usually is): the fact that Norway in no matter what so ever could or would risk getting in a negative relation to Great Britain and would go to great extent not doing so. This was the basic fact about...
Mostly true, but the Norwegian Navy (nor army) would NEVER open fire on the Royal Navy.
A small part of why the Navy hesitated in the opening hours of the war, was that they were unsure if it was the KM or RN that approached. And opening fire on RN ships was out of the question.
Margaret I of Denmark wisely focused on internal issues. So why not go with Margareta Karlsdotter (Sparre av Tofta)?
She was daughter of the Swedish Riksråd, Karl Ulfsson (Sparre av Tofta) and could possibly strengthen the Kalmar Union...
That would be perfectly correct. The Sound Due were instituted by Erik in 1429.
What I meant to imply was that it would be difficult to avoid heavy resistance to a power establishing total control over Öresund at a time were English and Dutch had established themselves as world powers. I think...
Many valid points here, but I am inclined to believe you all to be too focused om internal matters. OTOH this does not imply that internal matters are to be underestimated!
IMHO the Danish Crown was plagued by moronic monarchs while the Swedish Crown was endowed with geniuses. But neither of...
"Clean break" implied that I read Your 1st as the Russian should end their "leadership of the slavs" as publicly stating it out of the blue.
From your last post, I presume that was not your intention. My bad.
