You could mess with the Napoleonic Wars quite a bit. Say Napoleon doesn't invade Egypt, which stays nominally part of the Ottoman Empire (so the European archaeologists never get their hands on the Rosetta Stone etc) so Egypt remains a mystery for longer. Then you could have Egypt successfully...
Do you think this would have a large enough impact? And how much do you think this would delay it? By the point that European powers basically controlled all of the Americas and effectively had trade routes globally, underming the previous Ottoman dominance of trade with the Far East completely.

I think such a country would be possible, not impossible but a real struggle to survive unless the POD is early enough to unite it culturally somehow, and centralised enough to hold itself...
No, the 1940s are far too late. There was no option to hold onto India by then. By the end of the Second World War, the choice was "you give us independence or we take it". They were all united in this. The latest POD I can think of is 1919, prevent the Amritsar Massacre. But a far earlier one...
Well maybe it would be possible. A lot of you are treating the Raj as a unitary part of the Empire, but there is a huge diversity in language, religion, and culture there. Enough that it could be quite reasonable to see many of India's states joining as separate members. This could break up...
What about a later POD? Say if 1848 is far more successful. The Austrian Empire splinters, leaving Austria separate from most of its non-German population, then the Habsburgs or an Austrian-led Germany is suggested at Frankfurt. Of course a large chunk of Germany is still owned by Prussia, so...
So an extended Cold War would actually make humanity less advanced than we are now. dropbearabroad, what do you think could spur technology forward instead then? Would going the other way and make the Soviet Union collapse earlier/end the Cold War some other way earlier be beneficial instead...
How do you think that would help - or rather hinder the West? Make them less militarily effective and secure for longer and potentially more open to invasions and they don't dominating the Americas and trade with the Indies?
So you think maybe India joins the USSR side and Sino-Soviet split not happening could make it more balanced? Maybe keep the Cold War going for longer, so the US and NATO can't rest of their laurels in the 90s?
