THE SEVEN KINGDOMS

At the Beginning of the Two-hundredth and Ninety-ninth Year After the Conquest

299 AC.png

A Year Into of the War of the Three Stags
(Also known as the Dance of the Stags and the War of the Seven Kings)
After the Battle on the Goldroad; Where King Robert Baratheon was slain on the field by the Kingslayer, Jaime Lannister

THE THREE STAGS

The Golds
: Led by the so-called King Joffrey Baratheon; firstborn son of the late Queen Cersei Lannister and the eldest of the supposedly trueborn children of hers with the late King Robert; Alleged a bastard child of incest and adultery, sired by the rogue Kingsguard, Jaime Lannister; The King in Casterly Rock; Derisively called "Joffrey Lannister" and "Joffrey Hill" by the Reds and Grays; Supported by House Lannister of Casterly Rock, Lord Tywin Lannister vowing vengeance (he prefers it be called justice) for the execution (he prefers it be called murder) of Queen Cersei, as well as House Tyrell of Highgarden, partly due to the betrothal of Lady Margaery Tyrell to King Joffrey and mostly due to Lord Paramount Mace Tyrell's grand ambitions.

The Reds: Led by the self-proclaimed King Stannis Baratheon; King Robert's eldest brother and Lord Paramount of the Stormlands; Claim based on him supposedly being the only legitimate heir to Robert on account of the alleged bastardry of Queen Cersei's children and the disputed paternity of King Jon; The King in Storm's End; Derisively called "the Heathen" by the Golds and Grays due to his worship of the Red God; Supported by the Lords of the Stormlands, with King Stannis making overtures to various houses of the Reach, most prominently his wife's Queen Rhea's kin, House Florent of Brightwater Keep.

The Grays: Led by King Jon Baratheon; Legitimized natural son and favourite child of King Robert by the tragic Lady Lyanna Stark, and Prince of Dragonstone prior to the untimely death of his father; King Stannis alleges him to have been truly sired by Rhaegar Targaryen while Lady Lyanna was held captive at the Tower of Joy, whilst King Joffrey decrees his legitimization revoked on account of his supposed treason against the Crown; The King on the Iron Throne; Derisively called "Jon Storm" by the Golds and "Jon Snow" by the Reds; Supported by House Stark of Winterfell, Lord Eddard Stark currently serving as King Jon's Hand of the King (having been appointed to the office by King Robert), and House Tully of Riverrun, King Jon having been betrothed to Lord Paramount Hoster Tully's granddaughter, Lady Sansa Stark.

NEUTRAL

The Vale of Arryn:
Under the regency of Lady Lysa Arryn on behalf of her son, Lord Paramount Robert Arryn. Despite credible rumours of House Lannister having had a role in the sudden death of the late Jon Arryn, Lady Lysa has refused to declare for either the Reds or the Grays, declaring the Vale neutral in the coming war - much to the great frustration of many lords of the Vale.

Dorne: Prince Doran Martell has maintained a near total silence since the outbreak of hostilities. Though many question the exact motives behind this complete inaction, there is some agreement that it may stem from bitter feelings over the deaths of Princess Elia and her children during the Sack of King's Landing. Many believe that House Martell of Sunspear intends to completely sit out the war on the sidelines, though some in both the Red and Gray camps propose that they can use the existing animosity the Martells have towards House Lannister to win them over to their side.

OTHER PARTIES

The Iron Islands:
Lord Balon Greyjoy, styling himself "King of the Isles and the North", has once again declared independence from the Iron Throne in what many are calling a "Second Greyjoy Rebellion". His son Theon Greyjoy, currently a hostage of House Stark, has subsequently been imprisoned in the cells of Winterfell as a deterrent against further aggression against the rest of the Seven Kingdoms.

The Wildlings: Lord Commander Benjen Stark of the Night's Watch reports that a deserter of the Black Brothers named Mance Rayder has declared himself "King-Beyond-The-Wall" and marches on the Wall at the head of a great host of a hundred thousand wildlings. Though Lord Eddard has taken note of the threat and has expressed his concerns about it towards his younger brother, little can be spared to reinforce the Watch on account of the ongoing war in the South.

Mountain Clans of the Vale: Ever since the death of Jon Arryn under suspicious circumstances, the clans have subjected the Vale to ever bolder and more frequent raids on the lowlands. Lady Lysa cites the need to chase them back to the Mountains of the Moon as reason for the knights of the Vale to focus inwards and "temporarily" ignore the happenings beyond the Bloody Gate. Some lords have accepted this reasoning, if reluctantly; though they expect immediate action to seek justice justice for Lord Jon as soon as the threat is ended.

What’s the POD from the actual storyline? Does Ned lie to Robert that Jon is his son?

What’s Renly up to? Given his closeness with Loras I could have seen him stake a claim with Tyrell support given that his competition are:
  • An inbred abomination
  • A legitimized bastard of dubious parentage
  • An infidel bringing a foreign religion to Westeros
Especially since Ned seems to win the chaos in King’s Landing at first & survive long enough for both him & Stannis to somewhat credibly spread word of the incest. Shit, even the fact that they were able to execute Cersei indicates at least some amount of support for the claim that she was banging Jaime.

This is a map for the year 2013 for the map game Iron Curtain Call: A 1992 Map Game by @Breme13 .

As a whole the world is currently stuck into a cold war between the Indo-Chinese Block and the rest of the world. South America is dominated by authoritative nations. The Algeria-Libya block dominate North Africa and have become major powers in their own right. Iran is under the Shaw again and is becoming increasingly Zoroastrian, while Indonesia/Nusantar is committing a mass genocide against several members of the nation including their conquests of Papua New Guinea. Mexico fell to the cartels after fighting a decades long war with the Zapatista and a worse economic situation leading to the creation of the Union of Development and Progress a alliance of minarchist or at least business oriented nations.

And so much more.
Why was Germany divided so much? Like even exceeding the 16 states of OTL.

What’s the POD from the actual storyline? Does Ned lie to Robert that Jon is his son?
Ned Stark wouldn't tell such a hurtful lie to his friend. Either Robert actually got some time with Lyanna and they both assume Jon is Robert's through wishful thinking or if Ned knew that Jon was Raeghar's he would have hidden his existence as Lyanna's son like OTL

unless the characters are way OOC, Eddard would stick to his belief that ambition over a crown isn't worth putting family in harm's way

Some major political divisions within the nations saw both Spain and Germany effectively give de-facto independence to all of their major divisions in the nation. That is what resulted.

What’s the POD from the actual storyline?
Still figuring the "exact point" of divergence, but the broad strokes is "Lyanna is (somehow) more receptive towards her betrothal to Robert, (somehow also) culminating in a... lovely conversation between the two sometime before the Tourney at Harrenhal." Cue the whole mess that follows, and when Ned returns to Kings Landing with Lyanna's body and a child he tells Robert is his? No questions asked, wholeheartedly accepted, followed by the boy being impulsively legitimized on the spot as one of his first acts as King. He's still talked into a marriage with Cersei for the sake of an alliance with House Lannister and producing trueborn heirs. Cue the disaster marriage of canon but worse, with Jon's presence making Cersei make canon Cat look like the best stepmum one could ever wish for.
Does Ned lie to Robert that Jon is his son?
Funny enough? No. At least so far that when he presented the babe his sister died giving birth to in the tower to Robert, he truly believed (for the most part, the rest of it hoped) him to have been sired by Robert. Now sure, Rhaegar did have nine months to Robert's one night, not to mention that some babies arrive earlier than nine months... But there is also the occasional child born a bit later than usual. And that he took after his mother is a non-issue, after all his own children (sans Arya) do so with their Tully looks. Surely, the Seed is Strong... is it not?
What’s Renly up to? Given his closeness with Loras I could have seen him stake a claim with Tyrell support
Due to the butterflies that ensued from Stannis receiving Storm's End ITTL (Bobby B having bestowed Dragonstone to Jon) affecting his upbringing; a tempered sense of ambition, no land to his name, a lack of inheritance prospects (Stan has multiple kids, if all girls), and a disinterest to marry and have kids... I actually had it that Renly offered himself up to Robert's Kingsguard shortly after Jaime and the more Pro-Lannister KGs fled with/left for Joffrey.

Joff's betrothal to Margaery was a match made before the whole mess occurre. Given Robert already had ties with the North via Jon, he had his "trueborn heir" betrothed to a Tyrell to bring the Reach closer to the crown. Needless to say, it bit him massively in the bum when crap hit the fan, with it incentivizing Mace to throw his lot with Joffrey.

Well... the whole "Tywin prefers Cersei's death be called murder"... he's not wrong per se. Gist is that Cersei had a long habit of constantly threatening to do terrible things to Jon to Robert if he so much dared bring him too near to her vicinity (see what she threatened to do with Mya Stone in canon). Jon being the son of Robert's much beloved Lyanna, he doesn't bend to such threats which leads to things getting pretty heated and physical between him and Cersei. Multiple years of this crap culminates in Robert eventually deciding to have Jon fostered all the way up in Winterfell, which calms things somewhat... for awhile, until Jon Arryn dies and Bob has the bright idea of going north to not only ask his best friend to become his next hand, but also to go fetch his favorite child and bring him back to Kings Landing. Cersei is livid, and on top of paranoia amid the incest investigation ends up drafting a much more ambitious (and dafter) plan to off Robert and Jon in one fell swoop.

It fails. Bigtime. With Robert surviving the attempt and being told that not only did Cersei try something dumb with dear Jon that she also cuckolded him and is passing off her kids as his... Let's just say that day, Robert unleashed his inner Ivan the Terrible upon her, with him retroactively trying to justify the incident with "I am he King and she is obviously guilty, ergo it was justice". Joff here had a more distant relationship with his "dad" and a more toxically dependent one on his mom, both the result of Robert neglecting him and his siblings in favour of lavishing all his love and attention on Jon (even if that manifested more as "cool uncle who visits sometimes"), so when he hears his "dad" just killed his mom in a (semi)drunken rage? He flees to his grandfather's castle, tells him all how his dad has become another Aerys, and gets his backing for his own shot at a Rebellion.

Stannis in the meantime is pretty miffed that although Robert has become aware of the truth behind Joff and co. that he doesn't extend the same suspicions towards a very much still Stark-looking ITTL Jon. Though with Joffrey in revolt with Tywin's (and later Mace's) backing, he decides to let the matter lie until Robert crushes his rogue "son's" uprising, begrudgingly standing by his older brother. And then Robert promptly gets himself killed on the very first battle of the war, all because he had the bright idea of personally challenging a very angry Kingslayer mad over the killing of his sister-maybe-lover to combat despite being fat, rusty in combat, and lacking a breastplate stretcher. With Robert dead, and the Iron Throne set to pass onto a possible Targaryen bastard due to Eddard refusing to retract his assertion that Jon is Robert's... Stan decides "to seven hecks" with it and stakes his own claim, leading to the big mess depicted on-map.

All sounds very sensible

That lacks suspense of disbelief for me. If Jon is legitimized there's no way Robert or Jon Arryn would accept Margaery for Joffrey. The North is already firmly in Robert and Jon's camp. Putting Highgarden in Cersei and Joffrey's camp is just plain dumb. Obviously Cersei and Co. will contest the succession. Better to betroth Margaery to Jon, then Cersei and Co. won't contest the succession as the chances will be quite slim.

Map of the former Yugoslavia on May 19, 1987 AD, three decades after the Austrian Restoration, one decade after the Collapse of Czechoslovakia, and 24 hours prior to the Fall of the USSR and the Collapse of the Warsaw Pact. I am not particularly well versed in post-WWII Balkan history so I have no idea if this scenario is even remotely plausible, but they say that reality is often stranger than fiction. The basic gist of it is that Yugoslavia is a willing Axis member ITTL, but the war ends aroud the same time as OTL and the country gets partitioned into occupation zones like Germany post-war. A different war around the Balkans and southern Germany/northern Italy means that Austria ends up firmly in the Western Bloc and the Allied occupation zones in Yugoslavia are in the north of the country while the Soviet zone is in the south. In 1951, Soviet Occupation Zone in Yugoslavia is reconstituted as the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia, a full member of the Warsaw Pact. Meanwhile, the (Western) Allied Occupations of Yugoslavia in the north are reorganised as the Provisional Government of Northern Yugoslavia, which comes to be dominated by Croat and Slovene monarchists who restore Otto to the throne and form the Habsburg Realm of Illyria, abandoing pretensions to being the legitimate Yugoslavian government.

EDIT:

Republics of the FPR Yugoslavia
  • People's Republic of Serbia
  • People's Republic of Montenegro
  • People's Republic of Macedonia
  • People's Republic of Kosovo
  • People's Republic of Petrovgrad
Crownlands of the Illyrian Realm
  • Duchy of Carniola, with the Princely County of Gorizia and Gradisca, the Margraviate in Istria, and Lordships of Trieste and on the Windic March
  • Kingdom of Croatia
  • Kingdom of Slavonia
  • Kingdom of Dalmatia, with the Duchies of Ragusa and Zara, and the Lordship of Cattaro
  • Voivodeship of Serbia
  • EDIT: Also, Kingdom of Bosnia
What’s going on with Austria?

By the 1960s, many Americans grew tired of the occupation, resulting in the US beginning to withdraw from the Deep South. This caused issues with the African Americans living there, as they believed that an independent South would discriminate against them. It was decided that the Deep South would be partitioned, with the Freedman Republic being for the black population, the Peoples Republic of Dixieland for the White population (with autonomy for the majority black regions) and the Free State of Louisiana for the Creole population

When TL191 continuation maps show the US actually letting a substantial part of the South go (whether they'd do so if a discussion for a different thread), they always allow Louisiana to break away as well. Controlling the mouth of the Mississippi River would be too valuable to give up both for trade along the river and access to the Gulf of Mexico.

I absolutely hate portraying the US as a USSR analogue because the shoe simply doesn't fit, but at the bare minimum New Orleans and the mouth of the Mississippi would be the Crimea/Kaliningrad analogue for this USA if for whatever reason they can't have all of Louisiana.

When it comes to the South breaking away, I was always split on it but I decided to just have them split off since I'd imagine they would form their own culture by 1944 and the US would prefer a pupet state (But again ive been split on this issue). As for Louisiana your right, I probably should have had New Orleans controlled by the US as a Enclave. I had Louisiana independent since I thought a French-speaking creole state would be interesting.

so for a while now i have been, to put it simply, burnt out to all hell. i've not finished anything substantial and it's unlikely i will for the forseeable future. but, that said, i was able to commit long enough to make a fan interpretation of fallout. i was originally going to do a lot of points of interest, graphics, etc, but... i'm just tired. of this genre of fiction. which sucks, because it's what got me into worldbuilding as a concept in the first place. i'm afraid i don't have a particularly impressive writeup or anything like that, nor do i really have the energy to answer questions. but, i'd rather know i'd published this here than not, so here you go.

In a steampunk world, it seems airships are still king. King enough, indeed, that they are a significant motivating factor for European imperial expansion into Africa. In this case, the eastern African realm of Zanzibar is perfectly positioned to receive a major airport in the new model city of Dar es Salaam - connected to other entrepôts like Aden, Bombay and Muscat, the Britannico-Belgian airship conglomerate Pioneer Airship Cº. is keen to "invest big".
For now (as OTL) the European powers are content to work with the local Arab "strongmen" - the Sultan of Zanzibar and his agents. If said agents (including the notorious Tippu Tip, his son Sefu bin Hamid, and the feared Rumaliza) prove more intransigent than the conglomerate had hoped for, well then affairs might get more... contentious.

This map shows tentatively proposed airship routes across the claimed territories of said strongmen, centred around three airship lines: The Léopold Line seeks to connect the Congo Free State port of Banana to the Zanzibari city of Dar es Salaam, hoping to be Africa's first trans-continental regular passenger line. The Rhodes Line, favourite of the British contingent of the Pioneer Airship Cº., is a new take on the well-known "Cape to Cairo". The only of these first three proposals not to stop at Dar es Salaam, the circuitous Indian Ocean Line seeks to embark passengers at Mombasa instead, before a leisurely cruise to Bombay via Aden & Karachi, thereafter connecting with other airship lines running to a multitude of cities long ago established in India.
There is still some contention, namely around the wisdom of placing refuelling masts deep in the Congo, and which of the eastern Congo's two major cities (Kasongo or Nyangwe) is best suited for the task. Surely Tippu Tip, acquaintance of so many famous European explorers, could never jeopardise these small, practically undefended positions deep in his own realm?

Victorious CP Falls Apart Layout.png

The former Central Powers and their former spheres of influence in 2024 AD. AKA the one where I got tired of all the maps where the CP win the war but Austria-Hungary and the Ottomans still collpase for some reason but Germany is perfectly fine, so I decided to make a map where Germany collapsed as well.

The Fate of the Central Powers
Germany: The country remained a de facto military dictatorship for several years after the war. In the early 1930s, the military government attempted to pass several pieces of legislation that would effectively end the autonomy of the constituent states and turn the country into a unitary state. The plan backfired on the government as many states broke out into open revolt. Germany's client states in Belgium and Eastern Europe took the opportunity to declare independence, and they and Germany's neighbours moves to occupy German territories that they claimed. Russia also occupied and annexed all of White Ruthenia and the eastern half of Ukraine. The States' Revolution eventually ended when the states' armies took Berlin under the leadership of Rupprecht, King of Bavaria. A new government was constituted under a Zentrum-SPD coalition who instituted many Keynesian reforms. The Empire was abolished and the state was reorganised as a federal union with a President that would be elected for life from among the Kings of Germany by all the heads of state of the constituent states of Germany. The Hohenzollerns were allowed to continue as King of Prussia, which was greatly reduced in size with the states it annexed in 1870 being liberated and its remaining eastern provinces separated and turned into federal states. Luxrmbourg also declared independence at this time. The modern German Federation is a federal union of constitutional monarchies and several free cities with a very high quality of life and a welfare state similar to the OTL Nordic countries, albeit with the traditional aristocracy and monarchies of Germany holding significant wealth and soft power in the country.

Austria-Hungary: After the war, Austria-Hungary was reorganised into a federal state but the forces of nationalism grew until the Federation of Leithania amicably broke apart. Several border regions joined neighbouring countries via referendum , while most of the territory was divided into new countries with borders based on a combination of ethnic divisions and traditional Crownlands. Fortunately for the Habsburg dynasty, the Emperor-King Karl and Crown Prince Otto were quite popular with the people, enough that all of the new countries for from the breakup voted to remain in personal union with each other under the Habsburg dynasty, along with free trade between the new states and also freedom of movement.

Bulgaria: The Central Power that probably fared the best in the post-war period. They would lose some of the border territories they annexed from Serbia to nationalist insurgencies but they managed to gain Thrace and Constantinople in 1928 after the Ottoman-Bulgarian War of 1927. Otherwise mostly peaceful during the 20th century, the Balkans have ironically been one of the more peaceful regions of the world since the Great War.

Ottoman Empire: After their humiliating defeat at the hands of Bulgaria in 1928, nationalist revolts exploded throughout the Empire, Persia moved in to reclaim lands that has been occupied by the Ottomans, and Turkish nationalist army officers attempted to depose the Padishah and establish a Turkish republic. Georgia also moved to occupy some of their claimed lands and support the Armenian Revolution. Troops loyal to the Padishah managed to put down the Turkish officer coup and defeat the Persian intervention, officialy annexing the Persian territories that had been under Ottoman occupation. They also managed to mitigate losses to the Syrian and Iraqi Revolts but both countries still managed to secure independence, as did Egypt, Armenia and the Arabian Peninsula countries. Most of Cyprus would later be ceded to Greece after a decade long insurgency on the island that resultes in referendum and partition.
