The answer has got to surely yes. How could any one side and support a child molester?

2006 was already toxic for the GOP with a number of scandals occurring against a backdrop of massive unpopularity for W. Throwing a child molestation scandal involving the top Republican in the House and third in line to the Presidency would be like throwing gasoline on a fire. You'd have Hastert resigning and a messy GOP leadership fight in the middle of what was already an ugly environment. So, yes, it would help and it would spill over into other races such as Senate and gubernatorial contests, perhaps throwing the closer ones over to Democrats.
