Settling Acounts: Drive to the east

I don't see a democratic bloc in the post-war era. The USA will be an authoritarian, probalby racist socialist state by the time the war. Blacks, canadians and mormons are probably all persecuted with attempts to wipe them out.

nah... there's no reason for the US to go all nuts like that. The handful of blacks in the US aren't bothering anyone, why would they be targeted for genocide? Canada will likely be simmering with revolt, but the US simply won't go trying to wipe them out... they will clamp down on them certainly, but the US public wouldn't stand for a genocide campaign. The Mormons are going to be treated similarly... they revolted twice against the US and are going to be in a state of perpetual lock-down...

the poins is that a more likely scenario than featherstone's rise in the CSA would have been for BOTH nations to get hitler figures. The society of a USA that lost 2 major wars before winning this world's WWI would have been more alienated and more likely to fall to a fascist demagogue who promotes mass genocide after suffering a catastrophic loss of prosperity(the 1929 crash).

Utah will nevr be a happy place in this timeline. The United States should let them go, although that will most likely never happen.

As I said: the USA's Northern Ireland (but possibly without the loyalists...though maybe we just never see any).

Is it ever mentioned that Newfoundland is occupied by the United States? I know that in OTL (and I don't think this changed in Turtledove's TL) Newfoundland was separate from Canada until 1949 (Date may be wrong)...

I don't think canada would still be simmering in modern times if the US wins WWII.

For one thing we know from different characters that more and more the natives of canada are becoming assimilated into the US. By the late half of the century I can see most of canada being US states, with a few tokens like the northwest territories and newfoundland becoming part of quebec.

Well I doubt the United States would allow Great Britian to have a base in the Canada, so if it's not occupied it might be owned by the United States, or maybe it's a seperate territory in the American Empire.

Well, yes, but I don't remember the book saying that Newfoundland was occupied- Most inhabitabed places in Canada had been occupied by the USA, and Canada had been combined into one large unit, so the USA had grounds to force the United Kingdom to give up it's claims to Canada. Newfoundland, however, is completely separate- Yes, the United States might not want it there, but I don't believe that the US had grounds to annex it, so it's most likely still there, though the US could easily require it to be demilitarized. (How militarized was NFL at this time? IIRC, most of the military operations for Britain in North America were in Nova Scotia and British Columbia.)

Sorry to disappoint all patriotic Canadians, but Turtledove definitely mentioned (I think it was in "The Victorious Opposition") that Newfoundland is occupied when he lists all the territories that the US took from Britain after the Great War: "The Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada." "And Newfoundland, which is technically not part of Canada." "What difference does it make?" Or some dialogue like that.

I don't this American occupation can find its backside with both hands, as for some reason they have neglected to rename British Columbia!! And it's not just the maps - in "The Centre Cannot Hold" the Japanese are said to be messing around in "British" Columbia. Mad...

Well let's think about that though. We fought two wars against the British in OTL and still have a section of the country named NEW England. Plus states of Virginia, North and South Carolina which are all named after British Royalty.

So if we didn't change the names of our states or regions when we seperated from England, I can buy the US keeping BC as BC for the time being.

If they made statehood, then maybe they'd come in as Columbia. But if they didn't, no big deal.

Editing to say I forgot New York which is a british name. And there's probably others I'm forgetting, including countless cities.

Not to mention, out of the original 13, Georgia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania (although Penn is now an honorary American), New Jersey, and New Hampshire.

I surrender. Hah, and I was just remarking the other day to someone that the US still has four states named after British monarchs...

The references to China are sparse. During the depression one character remarks "things couldn't get any worse" and another replies "you could be a heathen Chinese" or something like that. Later, when talking about Japan in the 1940s, a character says "they have designs on China". I'm guessing this means they haven't actually attempted to invade or occupy any of China yet.
