Sikh India?

Akbar the Great, who already had syncretic beliefs sees Sikhism as a way to unite India into one monotheistic faith, converts to Sikhism and promotes conversion throughout the empire.

How far could the process go? Could a majority of India have ended up Sikh?

Would this have torn the empire apart just as the British are appearing on the scene?

Would muslims as well as Hindus convert?

Obviously this would have changed the history of Sikhism, Guru Arjun Dev would probably have not been killed.

Trouble is that Akbar's syncretic beliefs were already rather unpopular. If he goes as far as adopting Sikhism all the gains made during his lifetime might well be overthrown after his death.

Also, it's going to be very hard to convert the vast mass of the Hindu population to Sikhism.

I have to say that I don't think that Sikhism is ready to take off on a larger scale at this time period- you need the Sikhs to consolidate and develop the identity that they did by the 19th C.
