What if Robert Kennedy had agreed to challenge LBJ when he was first asked in 1967? He would like McCarthy OTL have embarrassed Johnson in New Hampshire. LBJ will still withdraw. The big difference is in the primaries OTL where McCarthy and Kennedy competed, RFK would win the combined Kennedy McCarthy vote and therefore win in landslides. The other POD is that because of death threats, President Johnson orders Secret Service protection for Kennedy, They stop Sirhan. Would the big primary victories have impressed party leaders. Could he win the nomination? If not, would he accept Humphrey's offer to be his running mate? Either way I say a united Democratic Party winning the election.
